Wellesley Project Update - July 2020

Wellesley Project Update

Wellesley is now home to more than 600 families.

You will have seen that the majority of sites across Wellesley stopped work as we went into Lockdown, with a few demolition and highway projects being able to continue operating following the strict Government guidance. The guidance now allows construction sites to reopen and operate under social distancing restrictions. Each developer on site has been adapting the way they work to ensure that their staff, residents and the public are safe at all times.

Pennefathers Junction

After receiving final design approval, works are now underway to create a junction at the end of Pennefathers Road onto the A325. The junction will allow cars to turn left out of Pennefathers Road onto Farnborough Road and turn left from Farnborough Road into Pennefathers Road. The junction is due to be finished this summer (the original deadline was pushed back due to the Covid-19).

Once phase one is complete, we will then move on to phase two which will see a safe pedestrian crossing created across Farnborough Road. The programme for the second stage of works will be finalised once further survey/ design works have been agreed with the County Council. The survey works involved cannot be carried out until Phase One is completed.

Queens Avenue

Later this summer we will be starting work to the second phase of Queens Avenue, from Hope Grants Road junction towards Alisons Road. The works will see the continuation of narrowing the carriageway and setting back the footpaths and cycle route within the trees. We will be working with the Cambridge Primary School to ensure that access will remain open for school drop-off and collection.

Government Road

Over the next few years we will be starting a large programme of works to Government Road. This will include the laying of a new gas main, the creation of an on-slip onto the A331, a new canal bridge, carriageway improvements and creating a new allotment area.

The first of these works will see SGN upgrading the gas main running along Government Road. The current main is attached to the side of the canal bridge and needs to be moved to allow for the demolition and rebuild of the bridge as part of an overall upgrade of Government Road. The works are expected to start this winter (however there may be delays in start date due to Covid-19) and are expected to take 40 weeks to complete. The new main will be laid under the canal. During these works, we will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum and will share the detailed programme of works later in the year.
