On Sunday 14th October over 1200 runners braved the torrential rain and conquered the area’s most popular running event, the Rushmoor Wellesley 10k.
Sponsored by Grainger Plc, Bellway Homes, Tesco, Mimosa and LJM Massage, the event takes place annually and is organised by Rushmoor Borough Council, Blackwater Valley Runners, and the Greater Rushmoor Nepali Community.
The route is set through the Wellesley Woodlands and offers fantastic scenery as well as a chance for many to beat their personal best due to the flat nature of the course.
“one of the most beautiful races… great run with really friendly marshals!”
As well as the main 10k route there was also a 2k Fun Run for children, families, and fancy-dress runners.
All finishers received a t-shirt and race medal, which this year featured the iconic Smith Dorrien building, currently home to Grainger’s Aldershot offices.
Key to the success and popularity of the event is the extra care and effort that goes into the organisation, from a ‘Personal Best Bell’ that runners can ring when they beat their record and then receive a shout-out over the tannoy system, to only using paper cups and providing recycling bins for any plastic water bottles. Massages were available for free for runners after the event, provided by local company LJM massage, and the after-race entertainment featured Nepali dancers and singers, highlighting the joint-community spirit.
“Despite the weather what made this so special was the fantastic turn out from the Nepalese community in Aldershot who constituted the majority of the marshals. They were fantastic! Soaked to the skin they were always smiling and encouraging and were simply wonderful. Big thanks to them. I shall be back next year!”
