Our Wellesley Woodlands is home to something very special – a bat Maternity Roost!
Our Woodland Rangers noticed the rare spectacle in the Rushmoor Bottom area of the Wellesley Woodlands. Up to 200 Noctule bats and pups have roosted in a Beech tree cavity.
The Notcule is the largest UK bat, and during the summer females form maternity colonies to have their pups.
Keep your eyes peeled, the Noctules will often emerge just before sunset, flying high and fast before swooping into dives to catch things like flying beetles, midges, moths and other flying insects from the surrounding open spaces.
