BARRATT GIVEN GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW HOMES AT WELLESLEY
Barratt Homes has received detailed planning permission for 454 homes at Wellesley.
The area being developed by Barratt Southern Counties, along with its sister company David Wilson Homes, is located on the western edge of Wellesley.
“We are delighted that our plans for this part of Wellesley have been given the green light,” says Barratt Southern Counties, Managing Director Julian Hodder, “and we are proud to have produced a design that will honour the site’s long military heritage. The architecture of the new buildings captures the spirit of the site and the Heritage Trail will give far greater public access to these historic memorials and buildings than there has been in the past.”
The new homes available on the site by Barratt will comprise 139 private houses with gardens (a mixture of three, four and five-bedroom properties) and 157 one and two-bedroom private apartments. In addition, the developers are creating 158 affordable houses and apartments which will be a mixture of shared ownership and rented homes. To fit in with the historic buildings in and around the site, Barratt has designed them to look traditional, but with contemporary details and low maintenance finishes. All of the properties will have allocated parking and cycle storage. In some places, such as along Farnborough Road, the four-storey apartment buildings cleverly echo the design of the 19th century military architecture that once stood on the site.
Within the Barratt part of the development there are nine hectares of public open space, while the housing area as a whole benefits from the beautiful Wellesley Woodlands, 110 hectares of interlinked woodland areas, wildlife habitats, canal-side walks and lakes that are open to everyone to enjoy.
“We are not just creating superb, easy to maintain, homes,” says Mr Hodder, “we are helping to build a whole new healthy and sustainable community.”
